Kapsaliana (Καψαλιανά ) Rethymno

Kapsaliana is a village in the municipality of Rethymno, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census they have one resident. They are 18 km from Rethymnon, and are built a short distance south of Amnatos, at an altitude of 260 m. [1] They have been declared a traditional settlement and have now been turned into a hotel.

Historical data

The area was part of the Arkadi Monastery. In 1600 the church of Michael the Archangel was built and in 1763, according to an inscription on the lintel, an olive mill began operating in the area. Gradually, a total of 15 houses were built in the metochi, which was known as Poor Oak. [2] The mill continued to operate until 1958. [3] Also in the metochi, wine was produced, cereals were grown, and sheep and goat shepherds lived in it. [2]

The village is not mentioned in the Venetian census. The oldest mention in the village is in the work Cretan by Michael Chourmouzis in 1842. [1] The 1881 census mentions the municipality of Amnatos and had a purely Christian population, 23 inhabitants. In the 1900 census it had 48 inhabitants. In the 1920 census it belonged to the rural municipality of Pikri. [1] In 1927, Kapsaliana was annexed to the community of Amnatos, where it remained until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when the village was annexed to the Municipality of Arkadi. [4]

The village was gradually abandoned by its inhabitants and in the 1980s the buildings were bought by the architect Myron Topogiannis, [2] who restored them and turned the settlement into a traditional hotel, which operates a Mediterranean cuisine restaurant and an olive oil bar. [5] The village's olive mill has been turned into an olive museum. [6]
