Adele is a village in the municipality of Rethymno, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 489 inhabitants. It is located 8 km east of Rethymno, at an altitude of 70 m. [1] In the village there is a 12-seat primary school, which also serves the neighboring villages.
Historical data
A carved chamber tomb has been found at Damourou, dating to the Late Minoan IIIA-IIIB period. Its shape is irregular square, with sides of about 2.5 meters. Two shrines, 9 vessels and two carved cavities with bones were found inside. [2] Pottery parts from the Minoan and Roman have been found at Pyrgos.
The etymology of the name is unknown. It has been suggested that it comes from the word adilo, adolos or some Arabic word. [4] The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Adhele. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Adele with 154 inhabitants and Francesco Basilicata in 1630 as Adheli. [1] In the census conducted in 1834 by the Egyptians, it is listed together with other villages in the area, with a total population of 50 Christian and 180 Turkish families. [1]
In the 1881 census it belonged to the municipality of Pigi and had 245 Christians and 15 Turkish inhabitants. In the 1900 census it belongs to the same municipality and had 230 inhabitants. [1] In 1925, Adele was designated the seat of a homonymous community in the Province of Rethymno, and with the Kapodistrian administrative division was annexed to the Municipality of Arkadi, where it was designated as the seat. [5]
During the German occupation, the Germans arrested 30 villagers in retaliation for their resistance and forced them to dig their own grave. Before their execution, one of them, Stylianos Harkianakis, managed to surprise three guards and kill them with a shovel, before executing him. [1] A monument to the executed is located in Sarakina. The central core of the village still retains its Venetian character. In the square of Agios Panteleimon there are two passports, which may have been the medieval gates of the village. [4] The church of Agios Panteleimon is the central church of the parish. Other churches within the village are Agios Nikolaos and Agioi Anargyroi. The cemetery church of the village is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi. [6]
Economy
The village is surrounded by an extensive olive grove and vineyard. [1] First quality olive oil is produced from the olives of the area. [4] In 1967, local producers formed an agricultural cooperative. Of its 79 members at the time of its founding, it now numbers about 150 and has a privately owned olive mill and a private press for table olives, as well as specific coarse olives and Rethymno olives.
