Kalitsaina (Καλίτσαινα) Messinia

Kalitsaina [4], formerly referred to as Kallitzaina or Kallistaina, is a small semi-mountainous settlement near Avlona and belongs administratively to the Municipality of Trifylia, in the Prefecture of Messinia.

Location

Kalitsaina is located about 26 km northeast of Kyparissia and about 2.5 km northeast of Avlona. It has an altitude of 419 [1] [5] meters and is about 17 kilometers off the coast of the Ionian Sea. Kalitsaina is further north than Sidirokastro, which is about 7.5 km away. It is also located near the villages of Platania to its northeast and Kefalovrysi to its southeast, from which it is about 3.5 and 7.5 km respectively.

History

The village has a long history that follows the history of Trifylia and the wider area of Avlona. In Venetian times it was referred to as Calciena. The settlement is also mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Providers of the Most Peaceful Republic of Venice, which took place during the thirty years (1683 / 84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. The village of Calciena (Calciena), belonged, in 1689, to the province of Arcadia (or Arcadia, that is, the area of present-day Kyparissia), which was one of the 4 provinces in which the Methoni district was then divided (Fanari province, province). Arcadia, Navarino province and Methoni province). [6] He also referred to various references to the names Kallitsaina or Kallitzaina or Kallistaina or Kalitsena. Kallitsaina was originally annexed to the old Municipality of Avlonos in 1835. [7] [8] [9] The village is mentioned, in 1853, also as Kalitsena in the second volume of the "Greek" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village of the Municipality of Avlonos of the Province of Trifylia with a population of 109 inhabitants, based on the census of 1851. [10] The seat of the Municipality of Avlonos at that time, based on the same source, was the village of Sidirokastro. In 1899 the village was moved from the prefecture of Messinia and belonged to the prefecture of Trifylia, [11] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the prefecture of Messinia, [12] as a settlement of the province of Trifylia. During the years in the official name of the village there were several minor changes: From 1879 to 1896 the village was officially referred to as Kallitzaina, from 1896 to 1907 it was referred to as Kallitsaina, from 1907 to 1912 it was referred to as Kalistaina and from 1912 until 1940 it is officially referred to as Kallistaina. In 1912, Kallistaina together with Sklaveika (Pteri) were annexed to the Community of Karamustafa, [13] [14] in which Karamustafas (Avlon) became the seat. In 1916, Troukaki (Panorama) was annexed to this community, while in 1922 Karamustafas and his community were renamed Avlon and Avlonos Community respectively. From 1940 until today the village is officially referred to as Kalitsaina. In 1948 [15] Kalitsaina seceded from the Avlonos Community and was appointed seat of the newly formed Kalitsaini Community. [16] The village remained the seat of the homonymous community, from 1948 to 1997, when, as part of the changes that took place in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Kalitsaina came under the abolished Municipality of Avlona, Messinia, [17] [18] until 2010. From 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Kalitsaina now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia. [19] [4] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlonos, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. Today, Kalitsaina is the seat and the only settlement of the Local Community of Kalitsaini of the Municipality of Trifylia. [4]
