Giannoudi (Γιαννούδι ) Rethymno
Giannoudi is a village in the municipality of Rethymno, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 116 inhabitants. It is located 6.5 km southeast of Rethymnon, at an altitude of 110 m, near the road to Amari. [1] It has been characterized as a traditional settlement of Greece.
Historical data
Stergios Spanakis states that the name of the village comes from the surname of the first founder Giannoudis. The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Gianudhi and in the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Gianoudi with 166 consecrated chores. In the 1881 census, it had 11 Christians and 107 Turkish inhabitants and belonged to the municipality of Chromonastirio. In the census of 1900 it belonged to the municipality of Vrysinaion and had 40 inhabitants. [1] In 1925, Giannoudi first joined the community of Prasse and later the same year in the municipality of Rethymno, where it still belongs today. [2]

Sights
At the entrance of the village, a three-storey tower survives, known as the tower of Giannoudi or Giolounda. Its construction dates back to the first Ottoman times (late 17th - early 18th century). Access to the first floor was by an external staircase and on the second by an external staircase. The second floor has six windows, organized in pairs and a fireplace. [3] In 1929, a primary school began operating in the village, which now houses the village's cultural association. [4]
Economy
In the village there is a mushroom production and marketing company. [5]
In the village it has been approved to build a water refinery for the water supply of the municipalities of Rethymno and Mylopotamos. [6]
