Lampini (Λαμπινή ) Rethymno
Lampini is a village in the municipality of Agios Vassilios, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 116 inhabitants. It is 27 km from Rethymno and 4 from Spili and is built at an altitude of 460 m. [2]
Etymology
The name comes from Lampini, an adjective that shows a connection with the ancient city of Lappa or Lampi. The old church of the village is known as Panagia Lampini, and the name of the village may come from there. It was formerly the seat of the Diocese of Lampi, when it was re-established during the Ottoman period. [3] Olga Gratsiou has pointed out that the name Panagia Lampini may be due to a lost Byzantine icon with the same name, which came from the Byzantine Lampi. [4]
Historical data
Remains of houses from the Roman era have been found in the area of the village. [5] The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Lampini in the province of St. Basil. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Lampini with 74 inhabitants, while Vasilikata also mentions the village in 1630, with the name Lampini. The Ottoman census of 1659 records 15 houses. [2]
In 1829 a janissary from Lampini, known as Albanis, was shot by a fellow villager, but was not killed. Albanis vowed revenge and on January 20, 1829, he surrounded the church of Panagia Lampini, where Christians were worshiping at that time. Some of the Christians, who were armed because of the revolution, closed the doors to defend themselves. Then Albanis and the other Turks started throwing burning rags into the church and burned the door of the temple and then suggested to those inside that if they surrendered it would not bother them. The besieged, although they did not believe him at first, finally threw their weapons out. Then the Turks invaded the temple, killed all the men and took the women and children and sold them in a slave market in Rethymnon. This story was told by one of the women to Robert Pasley, who also recorded it. [2]
The 1834 census, carried out by the Egyptians, records, along with ten other villages in the area. In the 1881 census it belonged to the municipality of Lampis and had 136 Christians and 51 Turkish inhabitants. In the 1900 census it had 154 inhabitants. In the 1920 census it is referred to as belonging to the Darivian rural municipality. [2] Lampini was annexed to the Myxorrouma community in 1925, but in 1931 it was designated the seat of a homonymous community, until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when the village was annexed to the Municipality of Lampis. Points of interest
In the village is the Byzantine church of Panagia. It belongs to the type of cruciform with a dome. Both the exterior walls and the cylindrical dome have blind arches. Inside are surviving murals in plastic style, which appeared in the early 14th century. The murals are largely worn and their colors have faded. [7]
Also northwest of Lampini is the abandoned settlement of Lofia, of which only two temples survive, the church of Agios Ioannis the Theologian and the church of Agios Georgios, with the second being frescoed. [8]
