Karines (Καρίναι ) Rethymno

Karines is a village in the municipality of Agios Vasilios, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census, they have 191 inhabitants. They are 35 km from Rethymno and are built at an altitude of 540 m. The village is accessible by carriage road from both Lambini and Patsos. [2]

Historical data

Stergios Spanakis mentions that the name of the village comes from the Homeric word Karina, which means fortified city or hill, and refers to the hills on which the village is built, and therefore the correct spelling is Karines. [2] Another theory states that it came from the mythological Karines, muses who sang about the dead. [3]

The oldest known reference to the village is in a document by the Duke of Crete, Giacombo Delphino, regarding the separation of a manor between George Varouhas and his nephew Michael in the year 1260-1262. [3] The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Carines in the province of Amari. The Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas mentions two villages, Carines, with 312 inhabitants, and Carrines, with 36 inhabitants, in the prefecture of Rethymno. It is not known if this was a mistake or if the small settlement was a large district. Vasilikata also mentions the village in 1630, under the name Charines. [2]

According to the Egyptian census of 1834, there were 7 families living in Karines, 4 Christian and 3 Turkish. In the census of 1881 it is mentioned as Karinais in the municipality of Merona and had a purely Christian population, 252 inhabitants. In the 1900 census it had 275 inhabitants. In the 1920 census it is mentioned as the seat of the homonymous rural municipality, in the province of Agios Vassilios. [2] In 1925, Karines was designated the seat of a community of the same name, until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when the village was annexed to the Municipality of Lampis. [4]

The ruined church of Agios Georgios is preserved in the village, the northern wall of which is frescoed. Among the surviving hagiographies, Giuseppe Gerola distinguished the frescoes of the devotees who support the temple. The frescoes have been removed from the temple and are kept in the cathedral of the parish. [3] In the church of the Holy Cross, an inscription with the year 1601 and the name of the owner, Frgias Vlastou, are preserved in the bell tower. [2] The church of Agia Paraskevi, built in the type of the one-room vaulted church, dates from the 15th century. [5]

To the northwest of the village is formed the small in length, but impressive, Carinthian gorge. The gorge is formed in rocky outcrops and its vegetation includes an oak forest. Along it there are small waterfalls. [6]
