Kerames (Κεραμές ) Rethymno
Kerames is a village in the municipality of Agios Vassilios, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 129 inhabitants. It is 47.5 km from Rethymnon and is built at an altitude of 300 m. [2] It has been declared a traditional settlement.
Etymology
According to Stergios Spanakis, the name of the village is a corruption of the professional name ceramic. [2] According to Lefteris Kriovrysanakis, there are two versions of the name. One states that in a cove near the village there was a place for making and trading pottery and other types of pottery and the other that the name comes from the tiles in the shape of tiles that were excavated on the hill near the village. [3]
Historical data
Remains of an ancient settlement have been found at Pyrgos, on a hill near the sea about 4 km south of Kerame. Shells from the site date from the Late Minoan period IIIA to IIIG, [4] while European reliefs on Taurus, coins and statuettes dating to the pre-palace period (2600-2000 BC) have also been found. [5]
The site continued to be inhabited during archaic and classical times and has been identified as the ancient city of Vion or Kionia, while it may have been the ancient Apollonia or Lamon. The remains of the city that can be seen date from the 4th century BC. and in addition to the remains of houses and pottery, they also include the remains of a 100-meter-long wall on an east-west axis, possibly the remains of a fortification, and the remains of towers have also been excavated. [4] It was one of the hundred largest cities in Crete. It was probably abandoned due to pirate raids in the 3rd century BC, with its inhabitants moving for security reasons to where Kerames and Agallianos are today. [5] Remains of another settlement, the remains of which date back to the Late Minoan and Archaic periods, have been found at Bissala. [6]
The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Cheramea in the province of St. Basil. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Chieramea with 207 inhabitants and 181 due chores, while Vasilikata also mentions the village in 1630, with the name Cheramea. In the Ottoman census of 1659 it is referred to as Kerame, with 15 houses. [2]
According to the Egyptian census of 1834, Kerames had a purely Christian population and the census states that 40 families lived in the village. The 1881 census mentions Kerame and Agios Ioannis in the municipality of Agios Pneumatos and had a purely Christian population, 337 inhabitants. The 1900 census had 440 inhabitants. The 1920 census lists it as the seat of a homonymous rural municipality. [2] In 1925, Kerames was designated the seat of the Kerame community, which also included the settlements of Agallianos, Agia Fotini and Ligres, until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when the village was annexed to the Municipality of Lampis.
