Moni Prodromou (Μονή Προδρόμου) Arkadia
Iera Moni Timiou Prodromou (The Holy Monastery of the Holy Forerunner) is a historic monastery, built 30 km west of Astros and close to the villages of Kastri and Perdikovrisi. It is considered one of the oldest monasteries in Kynouria.
History
The Monastery of the Holy Forerunner was founded, according to tradition, in the 8th century. There, in ancient times, there may have been an altar and a cave of the god Pan, which Pausanias saw on the left side of the road that connected Ancient Tegea with Lacedaemon. From a later inscription at the entrance of the monastery, its historical presence begins in 1126. According to tradition, when the monastery was being built, a carpenter was demolished along with a chipped stone. When the others came down to pick him up, they saw him walking up the path with the stone on his shoulder.
During the Revolution of 1821, the monastery, due to its inaccessible location, served as a base against the Turks, as a military hospital, but also as a shelter for the civilian population. In May 1821, the monks took an active part in the battles of the Dolians and the Berbers. In 1826, Ibrahim Pasha besieged the monastery twice, to no avail. The monastery of Prodromos was parish and belonged to the Diocese of Argos and Nafplio. Today the monastery is male and belongs to the Diocese of Mantineia and Kynouria.
The Monastery
The monastery perched on the rock
The Monastery of Timiou Prodromou, is built on a rock, above the gorge of the river Tanos, making the monastery inaccessible. The monastery is built in a traditional way, as it includes a narrow courtyard and the buildings of the monastery along with arches, stone stairs, loggias etc. The monastery's katholikon is located on the second floor of the south wing, built in a hollow of the rock. The cathedral is a domed temple, built in an irregular C-shape, so that it adapts to the morphology of the cave. Inside, parts of hagiographies have been preserved, works of the 18th century by the Neapolitan Hieromonk Jeremiah. The wood-carved iconostasis of the temple has remarkable icons, created in the 18th century. Next to the catholic, there is a long road that leads to the cave, without it being known where it ends. Some believe it leads to the Monastery of Malevi.
The monastery is now completely renovated. It has two shares: Agios Charalambos in Stolo and the ruined church of Agios Nikolaos in Perdikovrisi. The monastery currently has 4 monks. It celebrates on September 6, nine days after the feast of the Forerunner and on September 14 of the Holy Cross.
