Kourounia (Κουρούνια) Chios
Kourounia is a small village in north-northwestern Chios, about 58 km from the city of Chios. Today it belongs to the homonymous municipal district of the Municipality of Chios. The average altitude of the village is 360 meters above sea level. Kourounia is built on the northern slopes of Mount Amani. The nearest settlement is Egrigoros, about 1 km to the north, and a little further the villages of Aphrodisia (to the southeast) and Nenitouria (to the west). On a topographic scale, Kourounia is built on the slope of Rachi Kompou, high in the ravine of the homonymous stream (Kourounia River), which flows into the Aegean Sea about two kilometers north, on Galatou beach.
Kourounia is divided into two districts-districts, with the names Ftanados and Kato Chorio.
The name of the village comes from Koronia / Koroni, the name of several ancient cities and present-day villages of Greece, while there is also the village of Kourouni, in southern Evia.
Today's Kourounia is about half an hour's walk from the site of the old Kourounia. In the old Kourounia, ancient tombs were found, while in "Erinos" which was Phryktoria, a ruined part of polygonal walls, probably Pelasgian. In the place "Rouklo" (which may be a corruption of the name of Hercules) just outside the village, was found the ancient inscription "Iiron Irakleous". Around today's village there are the locations "Pateles", "Fonissa", "Kalofoka", "Chionousiko", "tou Mytiliniou", "Kremasto Nero", "Kokkinos gremos", "ta Spathia", "Lykos "," Vigla "," Kynagria "," Agolossias "," Kokistria "," Tsykalia "," Managoudi "," tou Galana "," Atia "," Kommoni "," tou Voui ta kremma "," Mermiki "," Soros "," Eftychiani "," Plakeri ", and Lakkostamata.

Kourounia has many beautiful vineyards. According to Glykas and Rymiki, "the houses here are more beautiful than the other villages, the roads are narrow and difficult, but all are clean". Due to the many waters, in addition to olive trees, other fruit trees also thrive, and the Kourouniotes are mainly engaged in tree planting. The village produces olives, oil, almonds, walnuts, legumes and the famous "Kourouniotiko" wine. According to K. Choreanthis, this wine is "equal to the best wines in the country" and for this reason he assumes that here may have been the ancient region of Ariusia, where the "Arius wine" was produced, a wine famous throughout the ancient world.
Recently, the "Ecclesiastical Museum" was created in the old building of the village school, with the old illustration of the village church with hagiographies of the famous hagiographer Panagiotakis.
The parish church (the "village church") of Kourounia is honored in the name of Agios Ioannis the Theologian (as in another village of Amani, Parparia). There are also old temples and chapels, such as Agios Prokopios, Panagia, Agios Georgios, Christos, Taxiarchis, Agios Ioannis Prodromos and Agia Kyriaki. The village belongs ecclesiastically to the hierarchical supervision of Kourounia of the Holy Metropolis of Chios, Psara and Oinousses.
The zip code is 82103.
