Katavasi (Κατάβασις) Chios
Katavasi (official name Katavasis) is a very small mountain village in northwestern Chios, 30 km from the city of Chios. The average altitude of the village is 300 meters above sea level. The Descent is built on the southwestern slopes of Mount Oros. The nearest settlement is Diefha, about 2 km by road to the north - in the past the Katavasi belonged to the Diefhon community.
The name of the village comes from its location, as it is located on the main road that connects the island's capital with northwestern Chios, in the area where it, with many turns, descends from the main "backbone" of the island to its west side. . This name reflects the fact that Katavasi is a relatively new village, built around 1900 by the inhabitants of Sidirounta "on either side of a small torrent", around the church of Osia Matroni of Chiopolitida, which originated from the area and practiced here 15th century. The icon of the saint is found in a shrine below the road, above the spring with the famous water of the Descent. Plantas and cypresses that turn green around give a uniqueness to the landscape. Also, to the southeast of the village lies a beautiful pine forest. There are other water sources, surrounded by vegetable gardens.
The oldest houses in the village are small, with a roof made of lightning or lightning, that is, ground soil, fermented and then dried.
The evolution of the population of Katavasi in the official censuses, a sample of the decline of the Greek province, is shown in the table.

The few inhabitants are engaged in their gardens and beekeeping.
