Kentriki (Κεντρική) Aitoloakarnania
Kentriki is a mountain village in the prefecture of Etoloakarnania and is built at an altitude of 1,040 meters [1] on the western slopes of Vardousia and is one of the most mountainous villages in Etoloakarnania. The old Slavic name of the village until 1928 was Androvitsa or Andrivista.
Kentriki belonged to the Municipality of Apodotia and its population according to the 2001 census was 78 inhabitants. According to the Kallikratis program, together with the uninhabited settlement of Sellos, they constitute the Local Community of Central, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Apodotia of the Municipality of Nafpaktia and its population according to the 2011 census is 103 inhabitants [3]. It is 48 km NE of Nafpaktos, via Efpalio and Limnitsa.
Historical data
The settlement dates back to the Turkish occupation: it was originally located to the south, but was moved due to a water supply problem or an outbreak. The area was originally home to large landowners, who were successively transferred from one land to another: the landowners hired workers to cultivate the fields, which were established in the area and thus the first settlement was created.
Initially, it belonged to the province of Kravaron, but in 1825 it was included in the Municipality of Apodotia and since 2010 with the Kallikratis Program it belongs to the Municipality of Nafpaktia [5]. The French traveler François Pouqueville mentions that during the Turkish occupation, between the villages of the Krava region, it was inhabited by 6 families [6]
He played a particularly important role in the Revolution of 1821 as the battles of "Papadia" and "the Ants" took place on the borders of the wider Kentriki Region. The battle of "Myrgygiaria" took place on October 22, 1828 and was a continuation of the siege of the Turks that had begun in September in the village of Lombotina, today's Ano Chora, and led by Suliotis Kitsos Tzavellas. Also, the "Tabourias of Captain Safaka" in the northwest of Kentriki are there and testify to the existence of thieves during the Turkish occupation.
Sights
Near the village there are two monasteries:
the Monastery of Panagia Varnakova, a monastery founded in 1077 and is one of the oldest in Greece.
Panagia tis Ampelakiotissa, which was founded in 1455.
