Elatou (Ελατού) Aitoloakarnania

Elatou is a mountain village in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania. It is built at an altitude of 1,000 meters [1] on the slopes of the Kerasovouni peak at the southern end of Vardousia. [2] It is the local community of Elatos of the Municipal Unit of Apodotia of the municipality of Nafpaktia and according to the 2011 census, its population amounts to 107 inhabitants [3]. Elatou is 49 km from the town of Nafpaktos.

General elements

The village was originally called Eletsou, a name that has Slavic roots [4] and means "fertile place". Remains of ancient buildings of unknown origin have been discovered at Paleochori. In November 1828, the settlement, like the rest of the mountainous Nafpaktia, was liberated from Ottoman rule and included in the newly formed Greek state. In the center of the village dominates the church, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior which was built in 1864 by Epirote craftsmen [6] while the school of the settlement was built on the same date [7]. It was renamed Elatou in 1928 and took its new name from the dense fir forest surrounding the settlement.

Administratively, it originally belonged to the province of Nafpaktia. In 1997 it became part of the Kapodistrian municipality of Apodotia [1] and after the reforms of the "Kallikratis" plan it was included in the municipal unit of Apodotia of the municipality of Nafpaktia [3].
