Grammeni Oxya (Γραμμένη Οξυά) Aitoloakarnania
Grammeni Oxya is a mountain village located at the northeastern tip of the former province of Nafpaktia in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania. It is built at an altitude of 1,160 meters, on the northwestern slopes of Vardousia and is one of the most mountainous villages of Etoloakarnania and Greece (see Greek mountain villages) [1].
It belonged to the former Kapodistrian Municipality of Apodotia until 2010. With the implementation of the Kallikratis Program (2011) it joined the new Municipality of Nafpaktia and constitutes the Local Community of Grammeni Oxia of the Municipal Community of Apodotia. Its population is 291 inhabitants [2], while it is the northernmost settlement of the new municipality [3].
Geography
The original name of the village was Sitista [4], probably due to the grain of the area and by royal decree, in 1927, the village was renamed Grammeni Oxya. The name Oxia is due to the large coverage of the area by beech and is the southernmost point of Europe with such vegetation [5].
A mountainous, genuine Roumeli village, perched on the eastern slopes of Mount Oxias, stretches as far as the rushing Evinos, bordering Vardousia. It is 89 km NE of Nafpaktos and 13 km N of Artotina. Houses scattered in chestnuts, walnuts and orchards and around for reasons with beeches, firs and oaks compose his image. The acquisition time of the village is lost in the depths of time. The fact that the place is scattered with various ceramics, jars, carved stones, inscribed slabs, traces of an old clay aqueduct and visible ruins of buildings lead to the conclusion that this area has been inhabited since ancient times.
History
During the Turkish occupation, Grammeni Oxya was the prey of Captain Tsam Kalogerou and the tradition states that in a strong tornado at the site "Pentivi" he just overtook and was saved when he succeeded and was caught by a beech while his 2 companions were lost [3] . In 1794, at the crossroads of Grammeni Oxya, battles took place between the Kontogiannians and Yusuf Arapi, sent by Mahmut Pasha of Ioannina. Fighting continued at the Stagia Monastery, near the sources of the Evinos River. [6]
On September 23, 1828, at the "Ripa" position, the battle of Grammeni Oxia took place, where the Turkish army was defeated by the Greeks and retreated to Gardiki. [3]
