Palailimnos (Παλαίλιμνος ) Rethymno
Palailimnos (also found in the male article Palailaimnos) is a settlement of the Municipality of Rethymno in the prefecture of Rethymno, Crete. In the period 1999 - 2010 Palailaimnos belonged to the Municipality of Nikiforos Fokas, which was abolished and joined the Municipality of Rethymno with the Kallikratis program. The population of the settlement is 104 inhabitants [1]. It is located 16 km southwest (35o 17 '32.39 "N, 24o 23' 12.22" E) of the city of Rethymnon at an altitude of 300m. The access to the settlement is made through the old national road Rethymno - Chania.
The economy of the settlement is mainly based on animal husbandry (pigs and sheep and goats) and olive production. Nearby villages are Kalonychtis, to which it belongs ecclesiastically, Saitoures, Agios Konstantinos and Roustika Rethymno, to which it belongs administratively.
Designation
There are two versions of the origin of the name of the settlement. According to the first, the name is due to a lake that used to be in the place where the village is today. The eroded rock that can be found there today, as well as the fossils that have been found, reinforce this hypothesis. According to a second version, the name is due to the many stagnant waters that are observed in winter and form a lake.
