Lagoli (Λαγολίον) Heraklion
Lagolio or Lagoli is a village in the municipality of Phaistos in the prefecture of Heraklion, Crete. According to the 2011 census, its population is 54 permanent residents [1], who are mainly engaged in agriculture [2].
General and historical data
Lagoli is built at an altitude of 180 meters and is 68 kilometers southwest of the city of Heraklion [2] and about 5 km north of Tympaki [3]. The settlement is first mentioned in an Ottoman census of 1671, according to which the majority of its inhabitants were Muslims. Two centuries later, the 1881 census found 75 inhabitants in Lagoli, with the Greeks constituting the majority (54 versus 21 Turkish Cretans). At the same time, Christians and Muslims lived in different neighborhoods, with the former living in the neighborhood of Mahala. In 1900, according to the Cretan State census, 105 people lived in Lagoli, while its Muslim community had virtually disappeared as only two Turkish Cretans now lived in the village.
The central church of Lagolio is the Annunciation of the Virgin [6], while the other two churches of the village are dedicated to St. John and the Archangel Michael [2].
Administratively, Lagoli was subjugated in 1879 to the Ottoman municipality of Kisson in the province of Pyrgiotissa. Later it became part of the municipality of Vorra and after the integration of Crete into the Greek state it came under the province of Pyrgiotissi as the seat of a community [7]. From 1997 to 2010 it belonged to the Kapodistrian municipality of Tympaki, while from 2011 it belongs to the Kallikratiko municipality of Phaistos.
