Historical data
Cenares is mentioned in the Venetian census. In 1583 it had 93 inhabitants. [2]. To the northeast of the village, on the slopes of Mount Soros, at an altitude of 1,720 m, is the Cave of Kamares. Vessels of the first palace style were found in the cave. of 2,000 BC, which were used by the inhabitants of Phaistos to study the Minoan deity. From the name of the village he got the name and the cave and the rhythm of decoration of the pottery (Kamaraikos). The findings from this cave are similar to the findings of the cave of the Truth in Amnissos and from this one can conclude that the same deity was worshiped in both places. The cave was found in 1890 and was explored by Italian archaeologists. It was explored in 1913 by the English School of Archeology. The village was completely destroyed by the Germans during the Occupation, along with Magarikari and Lochria.
