Administrative Region : Crete
Regional unit : Heraklion
Kalochorafitis is a settlement in the historic province of Pyrgiotissi in the prefecture of Heraklion. It is 64 km from Heraklion and is located at an altitude of 280 meters. Administratively, it was part of the former community of Magarikari, the former municipality of Tympaki and today the municipality of Phaistos.
The place name is patriotic. It is derived from the words good + field and the suffix -it indicative of the origin> Kalochorafitis = the originating from Kalo Chorafi. It probably refers to the first inhabitant of the area, Kalo Chorafi. Later, the patronymic is changed to the place name Kalochorafitis and its inhabitants are called Kalochorafithians. In its intentional form, it is made in Galochorafiti and Kalochorafiti.
Historical data
The settlement is mentioned for the first time in a contract of the Tavoulari man Manuel Morzinou on January 28, 1399, in which Kostis Enzos from the village of Kal (o) Chorafi declares his son Nikolaos Enzo as his heir. "Full and necessary | σεγουρτάδαν και ἀφυέρωσιν πιώ ἐγο Κοστῆς ὁ τζντζος κατ (οικούμενος) στο χορηον Καλ (ό) Χοράφη πρός ἐσέ τον πανφίλτατό μου υἱόν τόν Νικόλ (αον) τζντζον κατ (οικούμενον) ος ιρυτε ». (According to Manousakas, the village of Kalo Chorafi probably identifies with Kalochorafitis)
With the same name Calo Chorafi appears in a document dated October 1, 1454. This is a decision of the Rector of Chania, concerning the failed uprising of Pavlos Vlastos (1453-1454). In particular, Andreas De Graecis, who handed over to the Venetian authorities the priest Pavlos Kalyvas, one of the main pioneers of the revolution, demands in return for his services the granting of amnesty to the convicted Golgotha Gaddafo of Gradonico, who built Michael. George Kalvos, while he was living, lived in the village of Kalo Chorafi, as a villain of the Cretan Duke Kallergi: "pro homicidio per eum perpetrato in personam Georgii Calvi, filii Micaelis, villani de cha Calergi, olim habitatoris in casali Calo Chorafi". (And Spanakis considers that he refers to Kalochorafitis in both cases)
The settlement is mentioned in the castle of Pyrgiotissa by Francesco Barozzi in 1577 as Caloghorafici, in 1583 by Pietro Castrofilaca as Caloghorafiti with 108 inhabitants and by Francesco Basilicata in 1630 as Calochorafiti. From this period the whole small church of Agios Georgios the Drunkard, south of the settlement of Kato Metochi, painted with the technique of a fresco, in the first half of the 15th century, is preserved in quite good condition from this period - although it was occupied in 1866.
The Turkish census of 1671 and 1672 records Kalohorafiti with 5 taxpayers, while the Egyptian census of 1834 lists Kalochorafi with 4 Christian and 4 Muslim families.
In 1881, Kalochorafitis, which then consisted of three settlements (Kato Metochi, Mesi, Piso Rouma), is part of the municipality of Kissa with 28 Christians and 43 Muslims. In the same municipality it is recorded in 1900 with 47 inhabitants. Of the three settlements of Kalochorafitis, only Kato Metochi survives in ruins. The other two place names are unknown to the locals.
From 1920 to 1998 it was part of the community of Magarikari.
In 1920 with 103 inhabitants,
in 1928 to 109,
in 1940 to 113,
in 1951 to 157,
in 1961 to 142,
in 1971 with 102,
in 1981 to 115,
in 1991 with 131 and
in 2001 to 115.
Since 1998, Kalochorafitis has joined the municipality of Tympaki and since 2011 the beautician municipality of Phaistos, but without being an independent municipal district.
