In the north of the village, 2.5 km away, in the place of Grigoris Korfi, a built depository with figurines was found and also a protogeometric tomb was discovered in the place of Alisandraki.
The old village was built on Evgora hill, in order to ensure the defense of the population from the raids of the Turks and pirates.
Its name comes from the Byzantine surname Kamilaris = camel driver, ie the village of camilari. In 1583 in Kastrofylakas it is mentioned by the name Camilari with 77 inhabitants [1]
During the Turkish occupation, Agios Ioannis became known as the village of the bloodthirsty janissary Agriolidis. In Agios Ioannis is the church of Agios Pavlos, the dome of which dates from the 14th century and has frescoes.
