Paliouras (Παλιούρας) Evoia

Paliouras is a village of Dirfion - Messapia of the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census it has 418 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 170 m. [1] It is located 26 km northeast of Chalkida and 11 km west of Steni. [2]

Historical data

Traces of habitation have been found at the Lakkes and Reres sites since the early Helladic period, mainly shellfish and obsidian. Lakkes was also inhabited in later times. [2]

The etymology of the name Paliouras is not known. It may be named after a thorny plant that grows in the area. [2] The village from 1940 to 2017 was called Paliouras. [3] The village is mentioned in an Ottoman tax store of 1474 under the name Palura. According to the store, it had 14 houses. [4]

In 1835 Paliouras was annexed to the municipality of Lilandia. With the abolition of the municipalities in 1912, the seat of the homonymous community of the province of Chalkida was defined. With the Kapodistrias plan, it was annexed to the municipality of Dirfion and with the Kallikratis program to the municipality of Dirfion - Messapia. [3]

Points of interest

West of the village is the monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary or Panagia Paliourgiotissa. The monastery flourished during Frankish times, when it acquired a large estate and had up to 800 monks. The monastery was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1470, who slaughtered the monks and demolished the monastery. Only a large oak tree survived. After 1830, a small church was built on the site, which in 1948 was replaced by a larger church. There is also a guest house in the area. [2]
