Mistros (Μίστρος) Evoia
Mistros is a village in Dirfion - Messapia of the Regional Unit of Evia. According to the 2011 census it has 358 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 210 m. [1] near the center of Evia. It is 30 km from Chalkida. Its economy is farming, with the main occupation being sheep and goats. [2]
Historical data
Prehistoric settlements have been found near the village. In the cave of Meriani, at an altitude of 410 meters, traces of habitation have been found since the Neolithic era I. The cave is located near water and has good lighting and so despite its small size it was suitable for habitation. [3] In Drakospilia, a cave higher on Mount Olympus, at an altitude of 950 meters, traces of habitation were found during the final Neolithic era, probably by stockbreeders. In the same cave were also found finds of historical times, mainly wolves and figurines of the 4th century BC. The cave is considered more likely to have been a burial ground than a sanctuary, although no skeletons have been found. [3] Mycenaean tombs from the Late Bronze Age IIIA-B. have been found near Mistro. [4]
In 1835 Mistros was annexed to the municipality of Lilantia. With the abolition of the municipalities in 1912, the seat of the homonymous community was defined. With the Kapodistrias plan, it was annexed to the municipality of Dirfion and with the Kallikratis program to the municipality of Dirfion - Messapia. Until 1940 the village was written Mystros. [5]

Points of interest
At the top of the village, above the church of Agios Athanasios, the ruins of a medieval tower are preserved. The tower appears to have been built in the first decade of the 15th century, when the Venetians established their sovereignty over the island. The dimensions of the base are 10.5 by 9.5 meters and its original height may have exceeded 20 meters. The tower was partially demolished in 1948 to be built on the site of the fort, but the demolition stopped after protests by residents. [6]
