Nestorio is a small town in the prefecture of Kastoria in Macedonia [1].

Geography - Sights

Nestorio is located 25 km southwest of Kastoria. It is divided into Ano Nestorio and Kato Nestorio. Kato Nestorio reaches the river Aliakmonas. It is located on a slope of Grammos, at an altitude of 890 meters [1] and has a population of 964 inhabitants (2011 census) [2]. It has a magistrate's court, a primary education inspectorate and a tax office. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture.

It is the seat of the municipality of Nestori, which includes the municipal units of Akrita, Males, Gramos and Nestori. According to the 2011 census, the population of the municipality of Nestori was 2,646 inhabitants.

Remains of an ancient settlement, which was built on the southern slope of the hill "Kastro", were found near Kato Nestorio. [3] East of Nestorius and the military cemetery, at an altitude of 1,017 meters is a natural citadel that for centuries was a defensive fortress in raids against the area and is called "Castle" or "Kailas". It also has a panoramic view of the chapel of the Holy Trinity that exists every year of the Holy Spirit. It is a big festival, with dances and songs [4].

There are attractions the church of Taxiarches which is a three-aisled basilica built in 1858 and decorated with a remarkable wood-carved iconostasis and the Assumption of the Virgin, the oldest church of the settlement, of 1816 with a characteristic polygonal stone bell tower, old icons 19th century church books of the 18th century . Of interest are the 19th century stone watermill with the millstones in the two water mills [5] and the monastery of Panagia Tsouka in the neighboring Agia Anna, which since 1961 has been declared a historical and preserved monument [6].

Music festival

In Nestorio, the River Party takes place every summer, specifically on the last weekends of July, which includes music events as part of a camp involving well-known artists. This institution was started in 1978, by the children of immigrants, who came in the summers for vacations in their village and, having no other way of having fun, organized small parties on the river. Over the years, it has become more organized, creating the River Party institution that has been imitated in many other parts of the country ever since.
