Markos (Μάρκος) Karditsa

Markos is a lowland village and local community of the prefecture of Karditsa at an altitude of 93 meters [1] [2], with a population of 689 inhabitants (2011 census) [3] and is the oldest Byzantine settlement in Thessaly.

History

All the estates of Thessaly, including the village of Markos, were registered in the land registry, the one kept in Istanbul. The village of the landowner Markos is mentioned in 1336 as dedicated to the monastery of Olympiotissa Elassonos and seems to have been Hellenized by the emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos. After the fall of Constantinople, the village of Markos is mentioned in the Ottoman manuscript of the First Census of the years 1454/1455 AD. and on the map.

Markos and other villages were protected by the monastery of Lykousada. The village of Markos also refers to the intention 37 of the Monastery of Dousikos (Agios Vissarionos) in the Trikala Gate in the year 1530 as well as to the intention of the Great Meteora (transformation of the Savior) in 1520 and 1592. Also in the intention 215 of the monastery of Barlaam (All Saints) in 1613-14.

It is also mentioned on August 1, 1730 in a diploma given to the Monastery of Olympiotissa written in Latin, signed by Prince Rodolfo Kantakouzinos, with which a gold bullion validates old and new buildings of the Monastery of Olympiotissa. In this document with number 10 the village of Markos is mentioned as Delmarko as well as the village of Myrichovo (today's Agia Triada of Karditsa):

‘’ In viciniis Larissarum oppidis Mirihovon, et DelMarco cum annlxis ’’.

During the Turkish occupation of Thessaly (1430-1881), the village of Markos retained its Greek name. Since 1881, when Thessaly was liberated, it has been administratively subordinated to the province of Karditsa in the Prefecture of Trikala, specifically to the Municipality of Titan. From 1912, when it was recognized as a Community [4] and until 1928, it was brought to the Ministry of the Interior under the name of Mark. From 1928 until today under the name Marcos [5].

Sights

Sights of the Marco Community are the four Neolithic settlements 7000 - 3000 BC. also known as "Magoules", which have been classified as archeological sites since 1964.

Also in the Holy Temple of St. George, built in 1566, is the miraculous icon of St. George, dated 1782, and the iconostasis of the church, dated 1805. In Marko there is the church of St. Athanasius since 1744. and the new church of Agios Fanourios. An important local event is the festivals of the three Saints with the festival of Agios Fanourios being the most popular in the area [7].
Culture and Sports

Marcos has two clubs that deal with culture and sports. The Educational Association "The Creation", founded in 1978, and the Doxa Markou sports club, founded in 1975 [8].

Marcos is one of the first Communities to establish a Cultural Center and Community Library. The so-called Spiritual Center has been operating since 1972, as has the Community Library. In the center of Markos there is the stone Primary School.
