Ligortynos (Λιγόρτυνος ) Heraklion<

Ligortynos is a village with 481 inhabitants in 2001 and the homonymous Municipal District of the Municipality of Archanes - Asterousia of the prefecture of Heraklion in the province of Monofatsi, 10 km north of Pyrgos. It is located on the northwest side of a hill, with a nice view to the plain of Messara.

With a total population of 642 inhabitants, the Municipal Department of Ligortynos consists of settlements:

Ligortynos [481], seat,
Kefalados [45], formerly known as Kefalades. It is located in the south of Ligortyna at an altitude of 310 m. On a hill.
Plakiotissa [116], a settlement in which the famous dam is located. It is located 3 km southwest of Ligortynos and 41.8 km from Heraklion. It belonged to Ligortynos, when the latter was still a community. It has plenty of water and residents are also involved in agriculture, animal husbandry and beekeeping. Churches in the settlement are those of Agios Georgios, which is also the parish church of the village and Agia Anastasia of Rome, which is also the Patron Saint of the village. It celebrates on October 29 but there is a Divine Liturgy every year on the Friday of Diakainisimos. Other churches are the two-aisled church of Agios Panteleimonos and Agia Aikaterini in which a solemn i. Liturgy is celebrated on the respective feasts of the aforementioned Saints. Newly built temples are those of the Lord Christ in the place name "Round Head", and of the Annunciation. The Church of the Lord Christ celebrates on August 6, but is also celebrated every year on September 14 on the day of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The Church of the Annunciation is located right on the street, just before entering the village. It celebrates every year on March 25th.

Historical data

The place name Ligortynos is pre-Greek. Findings have even been found from the Late Minoan period, which are now in the Louvre Museum. Today's inhabitants are originally from Asia Minor (Caesarea, Pontus, Konya) and a percentage of about 120 people from Anogia, Mylopotamos (as well as Plakiotissa). of the place and were equated with the native element.

In a contract of 1271 we find it Legordine and it belonged to the manor of the Latin Patriarchate of Constantinople. In fact, he was hired by Iakovos Moudatsos. The Venetian census lists Ligortino, with 193 inhabitants [2] at the end of the 16th century. The Castrophylaka [3] also mentions the other settlements, Chieffala, with 41 inhabitants and Plachiotissa [2], with 94 inhabitants. All the villages were Turkish villages during the Turkish occupation. In 1834 there were 15 Turkish families living in Ligortyno, 2 in Plakiotissa and 8 in Kefalades. The corresponding inhabitants in the 1881 census were 163, 38 and 39, all Turks. In 1900 it became part of the Municipality of Charakas.

Economy

The inhabitants are mainly engaged in viticulture and olive growing, as well as in animal husbandry, while cereals and tobacco are also cultivated. There is a cheese factory, a kindergarten and a primary school in the area of ​​the village. The village's economy is mainly based on oil and raisins. In the past, the inhabitants were also involved in pottery.
civilization

The cultural association of the village is active, which has made the village a traditional settlement, with events, elegant interventions in the streets (paved) and highlighting monuments, such as the old aqueduct. On the south side of the settlement are preserved the ruins of a recorded church (Agia Triada), from the Byzantine years. The main church is Agios Charalambos.
