It is located about 60 km from the city of Heraklion. The inhabitants are engaged in livestock farming. Famous is Ochentria's cheese. Its location is 12 kilometers southeast of the seat of the former Asterousia Municipality, which is Pyrgos. The Byzantine church of Agios Dimitrios is an attraction. In the area of Agios Nikitas (where the church that was built near a beach) is a palm forest, the second in importance and extension after Vai. [1]. Other churches of the village are those of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Saint Charalambos and St. John the Theologian. On August 6th, the Metamorphosis of the Savior is celebrated on a feast in Achentria.
One of the earliest references to Ochentrias is in the province of Monophatsi by Barroci in his catalog in 1577 (called Aghiendra metochio). It is also referred to by the Kastrofylakas (K98) with 25 inhabitants and by Basilicata under the name Ochiendrea. "The etymology of the name derives from the ochentra, as the snake echidna (ochia) is called in Crete, so Ochentria, means a place of snakes. In (1881) it is refered as Achentrias in the municipality of Harakas with 282 inhabitants, and in the 1971 census it had 560 inhabitants [3].
In 1970, at Asfentilia Hill, at 970.43m. a TV antenna was installed. From the top of the hill, the whole plain of Messara, the Cretan Sea and the island of Dias can be seen.
