Kosmati (Κοσμάτι) Grevena

Kosmati is a mountain village in the regional unit of Grevena at an altitude of 750 meters.

Geography - History

Kosmati is located on the slopes of Mount Orliakas, next to the eastern borders of the National Park of North Pindos and is 17 km SW. from Grevena. To the east of the village passes the river Venetikos and Egnatia Odos. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. Before World War II, it was called "Orliakas Wine Mill" and there were 35 organized distillation boilers with wine production estimated at 150 tons by about 60 families.

Culturally it is included in the "Kupatsiochoria of Grevena" and in Vlach it was referred to as "Kusmatsli" [3]. The Code of Zavorda mentions its inhabitants as devotees of the Holy Monastery of Agios Nikanoros or Zavordas both in the period 1534 to 1692 (Bible) and in 1692 and later (Bible) [4].

The village is the home of the Macedonian warrior Stergios Teliopalos or Zapara, who was born in 1882 and fought in guerrilla corps in the period 1904-1908, when the Turkish constitution with his signature allowed him to return to Kosmati.

During the occupation, on July 9, 1944, the Germans executed 29 people in the village.

It connected Epirus with Macedonia and is considered the largest surviving stone bridge in Macedonia. It is 85 meters long and was named after Mustafa Pasha or Spanos (from Argyrokastro) because he financed the last reconstruction that took place in 1846. Next to the bridge there was an inn and a Turkish outpost.

The church of Agios Nikolaos since 1969 has been designated as a historic monument.

The Venetian river is an ideal destination for rafting and kayaking. His journey from the "bridge of Monachiti" to the "bridge of Spanos" is considered difficult and for more experienced [10].
