Similarly to the name Yalova, it is said to be the historic anchorage in the northern part of the bay of Pylos (36.949988, 21.677778).

Yalova anchorage is located just east of the northern end of the island of Sfaktiria and the "Old Avarinos" peninsula in front of the coastal village of Yalova, which ends in the northern Gulf of Navarino Bay and the Strait of Sinai. of Gialova, close to the beach of Voidokilia. Before the anchorage of Gialova to the south, the remains of shipwrecks of the Turkish-Egyptian fleet can still be seen today from the historic Naval Battle of Navarino. [6]

The northwestern shore of the anchorage is the landing arrow of the great fish-feeding lagoon "Daliani" or "Daliani" [7] or "Divari" or "Divari" or more simply referred to as Gialovas Lagoon. [8]
Etymology

Etymologically, the name Yalova comes from the Greek word agialos - gialos and the Turkish suffix ova (= smooth, Plain), ie smooth shore. [9] Also in Serbian, "jalova" means barren.
History

The village has a history that follows the history of Messinia, Pylos and the wider area of Pylia. The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, the ancient Pylos.

Administrative history

The area of Gialova after the liberation of Pylia, in 1828, was essentially various parts of the land, among the swamps, formed by the Gialova Lagoon, also known as "Daliani" or "Daliani" [7] or "Divari" or "Divari" of Yalova. Later, according to local tradition, a part of Yalova was also referred to as Yanuza. [7] However, the first settlement to be mentioned near the present-day village was the Pisces Farm of Yalova, [10] which was closer to Divari, about 2 km west of the present-day settlement, now known as Divarospita, which was originally annexed. old Municipality of Koryfasio in 1835, [11] [12] based in Ίκλενα (today λαικλαινα). Only 5 years later, in 1840, [13] the Yalova Fish Farm was detached from the Municipality of Koryfassi, which was then abolished and annexed to the old Municipality of Pylos [14] or the Municipality of Pyli, as mentioned, where it remained until 1845, [15 ] that this settlement was abolished, together with the Yalova Warehouse. [16] In 1853, Yalova is referred to in the second volume of the "Greek" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a "rural position" of the Municipality of Pylos of the Province of Pylia, without any reference to population, based on the 1851 census [17] The seat of the Municipality of Pylos at that time, based on the same source, was the town of Pylos, (Neokastron) and Kalivia. The village is mentioned, in terms of population census, in the 1907 census, as a settlement of the old Municipality of Pylos, which had 85 inhabitants, while Gialova '[18] was officially annexed, in 1908, [19] to the old Municipality of Pylos, [ 20] where it remained until 1912, when it was abolished. In 1912 Yalova was annexed to the Community of Pylos, [21] based in Pylos. The village remained as a settlement of the Community of Pylos, from 1912 to 1946, [22] which this community is recognized as the Municipality of Pylos (1946-2010) and then, after 1997, when then in the context of the changes that occurred in the local self-government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Gialova continued to be part of the abolished Municipality of Pylos, [23] [24] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Gialova now belongs to the new Municipality Pylos - Nestoros. [25] [26] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Koroni, Methoni, Papaflessa, Pylos, Nestoros and Chiliochoria. Gialova today is a settlement of the Municipal Community of Pylos of the Municipality of Pylos-Nestoros, [4] based in Pylos. This municipal community also includes Eleofyton, Paleoneron, Schinolakka and the islet of Sfaktiria.
