Pefkes (Πεύκες) Ilia

Pefkes (officially: Pefkei) is a semi-mountainous village in the prefecture of Ilia at an altitude of 260 meters [1].

Geography

Pefkes are built on the southern slopes of Mount Foloi [1] and are 28 km east of Pyrgos and 11 km NE. of Ancient Olympia. The village is located a short distance (3 km) and north from EO74 which connects Pyrgos with Tripoli and from the provincial road Platanos - Lampeia (2 km) that connects Ancient Pisa with Lala [2]. The inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. The patron saint of the village is Agios Georgios [3].

History

In the summer of 1989, a new Mycenaean site of Ilia was located at the site of "Deimande" or "Lithari", during the opening of a fire zone during the fires in the wider area of Olympia. In the middle of a slope that ends abruptly next to a torrent was found a cluster of four chambered tombs of the Mycenaean period, which are carved in hard limestone rock, orienting from north to south in two rows. In the first row there is only one chamber tomb and in the second the other three [4].

Name - Administrative

The old name, until 1928, was Veliza, so with the Government Gazette 156A - 08/08/1928 it is renamed Pefkes [5]. The locals still call it Vyliza, but it was also referred to as "Velitsa". It was first established as a community of Veliza in 1912 when the settlement of Veliza was detached from the municipality of Olympia and was designated the seat of the community. In 1930, with the Government Gazette 115A - 16/04/1930, the community was detached from the then prefecture of Achaia and Ilidos and became part of the prefecture of Ilia [5]. According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Pefkon that belongs to the municipal unit of Ancient Olympia of the Municipality of Ancient Olympia and according to the 2011 census has a population of 215 inhabitants [7].
