Nea Kamena (Νέα Κάμενα) Ilia
Nea Kamena is a settlement in the village of Kamena located on the east side of the prefecture of Ilia and further east of Ancient Olympia, near the banks of the river Alfeios. It started to be created in 1956 when the Pyrgos Tripoleos national road was opened. According to the 2001 census, it has 63 inhabitants. Administratively it belongs to the Municipality of Ancient Olympia.
Name
Its current name is due to the proposal of one of its first inhabitants, when in the past - due to unequal administrative treatment - it proposed to be completely autonomous from the main village Kamena to which it belongs and to be named Prasinokampos, due to the adjacent plain of Alfeios or Nea Kamena, which prevailed since most of its inhabitants come from there.
The original name of the settlement, which was Old Kamena - and was pronounced by all Old Town residents and Old Town residents - inevitably contained a somewhat invisible though not intentional - however - derogatory connotation. However, just as all the old toponyms carry historical monuments and secret information, so the etymology of the name "Old Kamena" means exactly that, that is - as the older ones said - in the current southeastern borders of the settlement with the centuries-old olive trees, where they have Traces of habitation (tiles, clay jars) were found. During the Turkish occupation, there was a village that, after being set on fire by the Turks during the revolution, was left to be called "burned", which may justify the name Kamena.
On the opposite bank of the Alpheus, just opposite the settlement, stands the historic Paliofanaro, which as its name suggests (old lantern-lantern) had served as Phryktoria in antiquity, hence the village of Frixa mentioned by the historian Xenophon. At the top of the mountain were the remains of an ancient temple, dedicated to Athena Kydoneas, to which Pelopas had appealed before his victorious chariot race with the basilica of Ancient Pissa Oinomao. Today, in the 25 houses of the settlement that are divided into two neighborhoods, the "Kameneiko stream" or Lefkiania according to Pausanias with its solid bridge, live permanently 20 families, six of which come from the neighboring Louvros, which is administratively under it. bridge area.
