Kamena (Κάμενα) Ilia

Kamena is the name of a village in the prefecture of Ilia, on the east side of the prefecture.

The history of the village dates back to the end of the 19th century, in harmony with a plaque that existed in the old stone church and is mentioned as the year of acquisition in 1875. and especially Nemuta. The fertile soil, abundant water and fertile plain of Alfeios should be the reasons for their relocation and the creation of the new village, whose name - in the prevailing view - may have come from the many lime kilns (limestone ) which existed and whose remains were preserved until a few years ago. According to another and perhaps more plausible point of view, it must have come from the phrase in the fires that was said about the small village that seems to have existed during the Turkish occupation and burned after the revolution of 1821. In the area near the river with the centuries-old olive trees still called Old and green from the color green and from the many leeks, as the old people used to say. The original name of the settlement was also old, in this area, traces of older habitats such as tiles and beetles have been found.

The boundaries of the village extend to several thousand square meters. meters since in the north it reaches the border with the historic Lala and Mount Foloi, from where the stream that becomes the natural boundary to the west with the village of Mouria springs, to the northeast it borders with Xyrokampos from where the stream which is the natural boundary with the villages of Louvro and Vasilaki and finally, in the south with Alfeios and Paliofanaro which are the borders of the two provinces (Ilia and Olympia) of the Prefecture. Kamena is built on the slope of a hill at the foot of which flows the Kameneiko stream (Lefkiania, according to Pausanias [1]) and its approximately 80 houses extend in four neighborhoods plus the settlement. At the largest level point of the village is built the church of Agios Georgios and the primary school that in the 60's - 70's, which had its largest population, had two teachers and more than 70 students. It had its own watermill, which is in excellent condition, an olive mill and until the mid-1980s, a samaradiko, a barber shop, a cobbler's shop, a butcher's shop and four grocery stores / cafes.

The inhabitants, mainly farmers, were engaged in the cultivation, animal husbandry and lucrative collection of resin from the pines of the large forest areas of the village. Due to the proximity to Ancient Olympia and the tourist baptism of the area, they are also involved in the tourism professions. Today, although with fewer residents - about 200 permanent residents - the village and the settlement of Nea Kamena, with most of the old houses renovated but also quite new, is a typical semi-mountainous village.
