The main square of the village which is considered the "balcony" of Iraia and is located in the place "cave", from where one can distinguish panoramic about 60 villages. The cultural events of the village take place there. [1]
Historical data
Very close to Ochthia is the area "Paliokastro", which has been characterized as an archeological site. A 14th-century Frankish castle may have been located there. The hill of Ai-Lias has also been characterized as an archeological site.
The original name of the village of Ochthia was Karakasani or Karahasani. It is speculated that it was either a Turkish-Albanian place name, created between 1400 and 1715, or that it was the name of a Turkish Aga (from the Turkish kara = black and the name Hasan). It has not been determined exactly when the original settlement was created. According to one approach, this took place around 1440, with the settlement of Albanians, but there are serious indications of earlier habitation, from the time of Frankish rule and Venetian rule. [1] Between 1836-1861 Ochthia belonged to the Municipality of Lykouria and from 1861 to 1912 to the Municipality of Irea. Then, the villages of Zoulatika, Karahasani and Bouza recommended the Zoulatika community. In 1927 the then community settlement "Karahasanitis" (Karahasani) was renamed "Ochthia". [1]
