Ochthia (Όχθια) Aitoloakarnania
Ochthia is a lowland village of the Regional Unit of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 40 meters [1].
Geography - History
Ochthia is located southwest of the artificial lake Stratos and east of Lake Ozeros. They are 15.5 km away from D.-BD. from Agrinio and to the east and south of the village passes the Acheloos river while in the north the EO Agrinio - Arta.
During the period of the Sixth Venetian-Turkish War (1684-1699), on September 13, 1684, at the present location "Mylos" west of Acheloos, an important battle of the Venetians against the Ottomans took place in the context of military operations in Aetolia and Acarnania (September 168). The Venetians, led by Francesco Morosini and led by General Carlo di Strassoldo, formed a military corps of 1,600 Venetians, 1,000 Maltese, 300 Papal soldiers, Arvanites, Croats and 1,500 Greek Generals. 1,500 soldiers and 200 cavalry had encamped on the west side of Acheloos near Zapanti (today's Greater Chora). The battle was victorious for the Venetians, and the Turks with several casualties retreated erratically, while the Venetians continued their advance to the bay of Petala.
The village was culturally included in the Vlach or Aromanika or Karagounika villages of Etoloakarnania (Palaiomanina, Stratos, Agrambelo, Gouriotissa, Strongylovouni and Manina Vlizianon). According to the historian Asterios Koukoudis, these Latin-speaking Vlachs migrated to the area gradually from 1865 to 1870 from Bitsikopoulos (on the current Greek-Albanian border). When in 1860 by law (Government Gazette 12/2 May 1858 and Government Gazette 14/9 April 1959) the nomads coming and going between the Greek and Turkish state were obliged to settle permanently, they decided to stay permanently in the area and to engage in the cultivation of the land [ 3].
Administratively
Ochtia is officially mentioned in the Government Gazette 32A - 08/12/1845 in 1845 to be annexed to the then municipality of Amvrakia and in 1912 in the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912 to be designated as the seat of the newly established community of Ochthia [4]. According to the Kallikratis program, it is the local community of Ochthion that belongs to the municipal unit of Stratos of the municipality of Agrinio and according to the 2011 census it has 506 inhabitants.
