Megas Kampos (Μέγας Κάμπος) Aitoloakarnania
Megas Kampos is the name of a settlement in the former community of Varetada, Aitoloakarnania and today the Municipal Department of the Municipality of Amfilochia. The settlement has 88 inhabitants according to the 2001 census (about 50 in fact) and is located at an average altitude of 430 meters above sea level.
Megas Kampos is located on the provincial road of Amfilochia Empesou. It is 11 km from Amfilochia, 7 km from Sardinia and 4 from the headquarters of the Varetada district. .He has a primary school and a small church.
Development of the settlement
The settlement began to develop after 1964, when a single-seat primary school was established there with 41 students (the first teacher was Papaioannou Costas Ch. From 1964 to 1970). The students came from the surrounding farmhouses (Provatsouli etc.) and families of cattle breeders from Evritania (Lithochori, Epiniana or Pigiana) and mainly after the water supply and electricity supply of the settlement.
In the past, the settlement was a passage for cattle breeders, who with their flocks went down to the Plain of Amfilochia or to the villages of the area to spend the winter. There was also an inn, which served travelers from the mountainous Valtos to Amfilochia for the exchange and purchase of various products and supplies.
Near the settlement there is an old monastery, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, with frescoes, which unfortunately have, for the most part, been destroyed. The monastery was active during the Turkish occupation. During the reign of Otto and especially during the reign, the monastery was forced to close, with a royal decree (September 23, 1833), as well as many other monasteries in the prefecture. The royal decree stated: "As many monasteries as have six monks, their property will be sold in favor of the ecclesiastical treasury and the monks who lived in them will move to one of the monasteries, which would be considered protected."
