Kouvaras (Greek: Κουβαράς) is a village and a former community in East Attica, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Saronikos, of which it is a municipal unit.[1]
Kouvaras is situated along the road from Glyka Nera to Lavrio, between Kalyvia Thorikou and Keratea. Kouvaras is located approximately 40 km SE of Athens, S of the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport and WNW of Cape Sounio and south of the Hymettus Ring.
The mountains dominate the southern and the northern parts of the municipality and consist of rocks and grasslands, forests lie in the eastern portion while the rest of the area is made up of farmlands. Agriculture and a few businesses are the most popular industry in Kouvaras, the shift to urban is not common as other parts of Athens but remains about most of the population and housing was slow. Later, Kouvaras became part of the Athens Metropolitan Area. Suburban housing did not affect much in Kouvaras.
Other features includes a football/soccer field hundreds lying south of the community centre and is home to the Kouvaras AC.
Kouvaras was struck by a forest fire that began in the afternoon to evening hours on August 8, 2008. Tens of houses were damaged.[CN]
Other
Kouvaras has a school, a lyceum, banks, churches, a post office and squares (plateies), its nearest gymnasia or high school is in Keratea. The only other populated town in the community is Néos Kouvarás (pop. 463).
