Kokkinolithari (Κοκκινολιθάρι) Thesprotia
Kokkinolithari (and Kokkino Lithari) is a mountain village in the municipality of Filiates in the region of Epirus (Kallikratis Plan). According to the 2011 census, its population is 54.
General and historical data
Kokkinolithari is located about 30 km from Igoumenitsa and 16 km NE of Filiates [2], at an altitude of 420 meters [2]. According to Panagiotis Aravantinos, it was the frontier of Venetian possessions [3] from the coasts of Epirus until the 15th century when the Ottomans expanded their conquests. As a settlement, it refers to the Ottoman settlements dating back to 1431, with 30 taxable households. During the late period of Ottoman rule, it belonged to the Filiates kaza and according to Ottoman statistics of 1895 it had 195 inhabitants. At the same time, it was the cradle of the Muslim agades of Filiates. According to a statistical table of Greek schools in the region of Filiates, around 1910 it had about 500 inhabitants, while inside the village there was a Greek secretariat with 30 students.
In the middle of 1912, Greek guerrillas, led by the chiefs Krommidas and Papakostas, executed the Muslim agades Fezo Gianniari and Metzio Karaka in Kokkinolithari. The following year, after the annexation of Thesprotia to Greece as a result of the Balkan Wars, Kokkinolithari was recorded as a settlement of 232 inhabitants (112 men and 120 women). Its population, mainly engaged in animal husbandry and agriculture, in 1928 had 141 inhabitants having an elementary school [9] and in 1940 had 294 inhabitants (all Greeks) [10]. In 2001, 76 people lived in Kokkinolithari.
Administratively, after its subordination to the Greek state, Kokkinolithari belonged to the province of Filiates, first in the prefecture of Ioannina [9] and then in the prefecture of Thesprotia. From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the community of the municipality of Filiates. As of January 1, 2011, it is the seat of the homonymous local community, of the municipal unit of Filiates, of the homonymous municipality.
Ecclesiastically, it belongs to the Diocese of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga. The church of the village is dedicated to the Holy Apostles. At the top of a hill near the settlement is the monastery of Agios Minas, which dates back to the 18th century.
