Keramitsa (Κεραμίτσα) Thesprotia
Keramitsa is a mountain village in the municipality of Filiates in the prefecture of Thesprotia in the region of Epirus. According to official 2011 census data, the settlement is home to 149 people.
Location
Keramitsa is built at an altitude of 580 meters on the slopes of the homonymous peak [2] at a distance of about 20 kilometers northeast of Filiates which is the capital of the municipality [3].
Historical data
South of today's village, on the community road to Malouni, the coma ruins of Hellenistic and possibly Roman times have been marked. The coma was built on a low limestone ridge (where the sites "Vigla" and "Paliokastro"), which rises next to the springs of the stream Daphne (or Tryfonas) [4].
During the Ottoman rule, Keramitsa was the cradle of the Muslim agades of the Filiates and only during the last years of this rule was it possible to redeem half the village from its inhabitants. According to the Ottoman census of 1895, the settlement was inhabited by 480 people (240 men and 240 women) divided into 32 khanates. At the same time, there was a Greek primary school in the settlement with a capacity of one teacher and 25 students. The operation of this school was mainly due to the financial contribution of the local metropolis. In fact, in 1899, 40 students attended. On the eve of the Balkan Wars, the village had a population of 1,000 and had a Greek textbook, which was attended by 60 students.
In early November 1912, during the First Balkan War, a clash took place near the village between a Greek guerrilla corps of Krommidas and Papakostas and a mixed force of the Ottoman regular army and naughty Albanian militants operating alongside the Ottomans. After the guerrillas collapsed, Keramitsa was set on fire [10] [11].
The wider area of Keramitsa became a battleground during the first phase of the Greek-Italian war. Clashes erupted in the village during the Occupation: on July 1, 1943, a battle took place between ELAS and EDES forces, [13] while hostilities between the two resistance organizations resumed in October of that year. At the same time, on August 9, 1944, EDES guerrillas clashed near the village with German troops.
Keramitsa was also a theater of military operations during the Civil War. In particular, at the end of February 1948, a battle took place near the village between the government army and the DSE, as part of a clearing operation called "Pergamon".
Administratively, during the last years of Ottoman rule, Keramitsa belonged to the Filiates kaza [17] of the Sanjak of Ioannina [6]. Later, within the Greek state, it was initially, like the rest of Thesprotia, part of the prefecture of Ioannina. In 1937 it was subordinated to the prefecture of Thesprotia as part of the province of Thyamidos, while from 1949 to 1997 it was subordinated to the province of Filiates. From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the community of the municipality of Filiates [18]. As of January 1, 2011, it is the seat of the homonymous local community, six settlements, of the municipal unit of Filiates, of the homonymous municipality.
General elements
The population of Keramitsa is rural and mainly deals with animal husbandry. Ecclesiastically, the village belongs to the Diocese of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga. The church of the village is dedicated to Agios Dimitrios.
