Kokkinia (Κοκκινιά) Thesprotia
Kokkinia (formerly called Kokkinitsa or Kokkinista) is a Greek mountain village in the municipality of Filiates in the region of Epirus (Kallikratis Plan). It is located 32 km east of the capital of the municipality, Filiates and is built at an altitude of 360 meters [1] on the right bank of the Thyamidos at the foot of the mountain "Ai Lias". According to the 2011 census, the population of Kokkinia is 130 inhabitants.
Historical data
In 1874, according to the report of Bishop Paramythias Anthimou, 40 families lived in Kokkinia, while a common Greek school with one teacher and twenty students operated in the settlement. During the last years of the Turkish occupation (1910), Kokkinia was a village of Kefalochori with a population of 500 inhabitants, while it had a five-class Greek primary school with 75 students. It was liberated by the Greek Army during the Balkan Wars, while in 1915 51 students attended the village school. In 1928, Kokkinia had 399 inhabitants.
The poet and lyricist Alkis Alkaios was born in Kokkinia, the writer and translator Athanasios Giagas [7], the poet and folklorist Spyros Th. Christidis [8] and the resistance fighter and envoy of EAM in the Greek minority during the Northern Epirus during World War II, Vangelis Doupis [9].
General elements
The population of the settlement is mainly engaged in animal husbandry and agriculture. In the past, Kokkinia belonged to the former province of Filiates in the prefecture of Thesprotia. From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the community of the municipality of Filiates. As of January 1, 2011, it is the seat of the homonymous local community, of the municipal unit of Filiates, of the homonymous municipality. Ecclesiastically it belongs to the Diocese of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga, while the church of the village is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary [1].
