Koini (Κοινή) Chios

Koini is a small village in southern Chios, about 22 kilometers from the city of Chios. Formerly it was the seat of a homonymous community, while today it belongs to the homonymous municipal district of the Municipality of Chios. The average altitude of the village is 190 meters above sea level, from which it is 2.5 kilometers in a straight line. Koini is very close to several other small villages: Nearby (about one kilometer) are Vouno and Pagida, while a little further south are Flatsia and Patrika, and a little further away are the two large villages in this area of the island, Kalamoti and Youth. This neighborhood is also related to the name of the village, which comes from the "common land of the adjacent villages" (Zolotas). Even closer (about half a kilometer to the south) is the Monastery of the Visitation, a nunnery founded in 1667.

Koini is a Mastichochori, ie one of the 24 villages of southern Chios where it is cultivated, there and nowhere else in the world, the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus, var. Chia) from which mastic is extracted.

Historical-toponymic

The male resident of Koini is called Koinousis (and the female resident of Koinousaina) in the local language idiom, a word that became known by the name of the Chian singer Georgios Koinousis. The village was basically fortified according to the standards of other castle villages (eg Mesta), as can be seen from the place names "Koulas" and "Kato Porta". Of the many medieval toponyms, it seems that there was a local religious center during the Byzantine period with many temples, most of which are now in ruins. Koini is one of the villages that was almost completely destroyed by the great earthquake of Chios in 1881, when it is reported that half of its inhabitants were killed. Inside the village there are the churches of Panagia (Zoodochos Pigi), Agios Georgios, Taxiarches and Agios Dimitrios, while outside it there are old chapels of Agios Konstantinos, Agios Ioannis, Agia Paraskevi, Agios Isidoros (with an old tower), Agios Viktoron, two of the Prophet Elias, Panagia Kambousaina, Agios Filippos, Agia Irini (ruined), Panagia Dafni (to Patras), Agios Apostolos, Eisodia, Agios Ioannis o Theologos, the Brigadier General, the High Commissioner and the Temple of Choices. To the west of the village is the site of Moustaras with a water source (where one of the two chapels of Prophet Elias). Also one kilometer southwest of Moustaras is the site, Noumas, also a source of water and a ruined tower from the time of Maona.

In Koini was born the hierarch of the 19th century Grigorios Konstantinidis (died in 1856), who served as metropolitan of Chios and Vizyi [1].
