Flatsia (Φλάτσια) Chios

Flatsia is a small village in southeastern Chios, 22 km from the city of Chios. Today it belongs to the Municipality of Chios, to the Municipal Unit of Ionia and to the homonymous "local community of Flatsia". The average altitude of the village is 135 meters above sea level. The nearest settlement is the village of Vouno or Vounos, less than 1 km to the north. Also nearby are the villages of Koini, Patrika and Nenita. The nearest beaches in Flatsia are Agios Giannis and Lilikas.

Etymology and history

Flatsia, also known as Flatzia before the middle of the 20th century and in the old Aflatzia code, probably owes their name to one of the following:

According to Jerome the Divine (Chronicle of piety), the Roman official Flaccus, who lived in the time of Mithridates (who destroyed the island and therefore needed to be rebuilt) and built the village, as well as high water reservoirs on the hills and more. large buildings, to which he gave his name.
To Fliasios Dionysos, who was worshiped in Chios (a version mentioned by Korais).
In the name of the House of Flessia of Genoa (the Genoese occupied the island for centuries), a view that is considered misguided by G. Zolotas.
The well almost everywhere in Chios was called traditional phlias (perhaps from its ancient name, well), from where Flatsia = wells. As a place name, the word Flatsia is found in Viki and Thymiana.

Economy and population

The villagers, called Flatsousoi / Flatsousaines in the local language idiom, are mostly farmers and produce mastic, oil, olives and almonds.

G. Zolotas in 1921 writes that "they are one of the smallest villages today, as soon as they number about 200 cat." and that "the present state of the village is mainly due to earthquakes, because, as Jerome and others say, the village once numbered more than 600 cat."

After the war, however, the evolution of the population of Flatsia in the official censuses (see the table) is a typical example of the decline of the Greek province, despite the relative proximity of Kalamoti, which has a high school, etc.

The parish church (the "village church") of Flatsia is honored in the name of the Holy Apostles. There was also an old church of Agios Loukas, while outside the settlement are the chapels of Agios Georgios, Agios Panteleimon, Panagia (at the location "Loukoumos"), as well as the ruined monastery (small monastery) of Agios Nikolaos at the site of Kamarotis. The village belongs ecclesiastically to the hierarchical supervision (committee) of Nenites of the Holy Metropolis of Chios, Psara and Oinousses.

The postcode of Flatsia is 82102.
