Mesolakkia (Μεσολακκιά) Serres
Mesolakkia (Byzantine Greek: Λουκκοβικεία) or Lakkovikia, according to others Lakkovikia is a village of Mount Paggaio in the prefecture of Serres dating from the 10th century. Today it is abandoned, with its inhabitants sharing between Palaiokomi and Nea Mesolakkia.
Historical data
Establishment
The Lakkovikiotes (Mesolakkiotes) are probably descendants of the ancient Amphipolitans, who in the 18th-19th century were mixed with Epirotes who arrived chased by the Tsamides after a movement. The location of the village is particularly hidden, but the fact that it was built near the ancient aqueduct of Amphipolis as well as near one of its quarries, advocates the kinship of the inhabitants with the Amphipolitans. The reasons that forced the Lakkovikiotes to choose such an inhospitable place must be the fear of raids and malaria, since in those years there was still the lake-swamp of Achinos. In a 13th century document it is referred to as the "village of Lukkovikia".
Turkish rule
During the Turkish occupation and until the first quarter of the 20th century, the settlement experienced great prosperity as its inhabitants were very hardworking and progressive. The proximity of the village to the port of Tsagezio made it an important commercial center.
Balkan and World Wars
Everything changed during the Balkan wars when the inhabitants found themselves in the vortex of war, suffering a lot, and then the First World War broke out during which the Bulgarian conquerors robbed the Lakkovikiotes, took the men hostage and burned the village. With the end of the war, many villagers did not return alive. This was followed by a fierce World War II test, culminating in an irrational fratricidal civil war that tested the survival of the settlement.
Newer period
Nevertheless, life continued on its way to Lakkovikia until the 1960s, when it was permanently abandoned to create the community of Nea Mesolakkia. Today the village is a reference point and a connecting link for all those who derive their origin from there, while efforts are being made to exploit it.
