Marathovouni (Μαραθοβούνι) Arta

Marathovouni is a small settlement of the municipal community of Arta of the Municipality of Arta with 82 permanent residents (2011 census), [1] and is a few kilometers away from the city. Next to the settlement is one of the two surviving mosques of Arta, the Mosque of Faik Pasha.

Administrative changes

The settlement was recognized only in 1981 [2] and joined the Municipality of Arta. In place of Marathovouni there was the old settlement of Imaretio or Marati, which was abolished in 1951. [3]

History

The history of the area has been identified with the Faik Pasha Mosque. The mosque was built in the second half of the 15th century by Faik Pasha, the first Ottoman conqueror of Arta, at a time when the sultan was Bayezid II. [4]

Based on the work of Konstantinos Diamantis entitled "Arta and its surroundings during the times of the revolution", 10 families lived in the area during the period when the Greek Revolution of 1821 broke out. [5]

The area was a battle theater during the Revolution of 1821. According to Ioannis Makrygiannis, on November 14, 1821, Markos Botsaris with 300 men fortified himself in the mosque. Several chiefs were drafted with him, including Georgios Karaiskakis. [6] [7]

William Martin Leek also mentions the location, informing us that there were plenty of hazelnuts in Marathi, while François Pouqueville informs us about the significant number of oranges, lemons, olive trees and reeds that covered the area. [8] [8] ]

Seraphim Xenopoulos, Metropolitan of Arta, refers to the area in the "Essay on the History of Arta & Preveza" (published in 1884). Seraphim Xenopoulos gives us the information that in 1884 in the area around the mosque lived about 10 Christian families and six with seven Ottomans, who were praying in the mosque. [10]

During the unfortunate Greek-Turkish war of 1897, the area around the mosque was once again a battleground between Greek forces under the command of Colonel Thrasyvoulos Manos and the Turks of Ahmet Hifsi Pasha. [11] [12]

Location and access

Marathovouni is adjacent to Eleousa, Rokka, Grammenitsa and the city of Arta. The settlement is located next to the bypass of Filippiada on the Ionian Road and is a short distance from the river Arachthos. [13]
