Lykoudesi [2] or Lykoudesio, officially referred to as Lykoudesion and formerly Chrysikos, is a mountainous settlement near Raptopoulos and is administratively part of the Municipality of Trifylia, in the prefecture of Messinia.
Location
Lykoudesi is located about 27.5 km southeast of Kyparissia on the provincial road that connects Kyparissia with Messina. [5] The village is on the borders of the old provinces of Trifylia and Messina, between the villages of Raftopoulos and Tripyla, from which it is about 4 km and 0.5 km respectively. [2] Lykoudesi is at an altitude of 596 [1] [6] -600 [2] meters and is about 27.5 kilometers off the coast of the Ionian Sea.
History
The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, the ancient Pylos. The village itself has a long history. From time to time it was referred to as Licudhessi or Lykoudesi or Lykoudesi or Lichoudesi or Lichoudesi or Chrysikos. According to the official version of the Municipality of Trifylia, but also the local tradition, there are two versions of the origin of the name of the village. [2] According to one version, after a wolf attacked a resident of the village, he managed to tie the wolf with hair, while according to the second version, the name came from a resident of the area with the name or nickname Wolf, who had a watermill nearby. The river and the moat of the watermill's ditch were located near the big fountain of the village, so that this location was named "the wolf's bond". [2] [5]
Venetian domination
In Venetian times it was referred to as Licudhessi. The settlement is also mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Providers of the Most Peaceful Republic of Venice, which took place during the thirty years (1683 / 84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. Licudhessi (Licudhessi), belonged, in 1689, to the province of Arcadia (or Arcadia, ie the area of today's Kyparissia), which was one of the 4 provinces, which then separated the district of Methoni (Fanari province, Arcadia province). , Navarino province and Methoni province). [7]
Battle of Lykoudesi
On April 30, 1827, the Battle of Lykoudesi took place, [5] where forces of Trifilia and Olympia, led by Dredes and Papa-Dimitris Papatsoris, were victorious and forced to retreat parts of Ibrahim's army, which arrived in the village area during during his campaign in the Peloponnese.
Administrative history
Lykoudesi was annexed to the old Municipality of Tripoli in 1835. [8] [9] The village is mentioned, in 1853 in the second volume of "Ellinika" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis as a village of the Municipality of Tripili of the Province of Trifylia with a population of 188 inhabitants, based on the census of 1851. [10] The village was officially referred to as Lykoudesion, for the first time, at least from 1889 until before 1896, when the official mention was made as Lykoudesi, until 1907 when it became Lichoudesi, based on the relevant censuses of those years. . In 1899 he was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and belonged to the Prefecture of Trifylia, [11] for about a decade, until 1909, when he returned to the Prefecture of Messinia, [12] as a settlement of the Province of Trifylia.
In 1912, Lichoudesi or Lykoudesi became the seat of the Community of Lichoudesi or Lykoudesi, [13] [14] to which the villages of Asoutena (now Palea Vrysi) and Kloni were initially annexed, and then, from 1919, [15] the village of Tripyla, which remained in this community until 1928, as it later became the seat of the homonymous Tripyla Community. [16]
In 1940 [17] the village was officially renamed, for the second time, Lykoudision until 1970, [18] which was renamed Chrysikos and the community Chrysikou Community. This name was used for a short time, from 1970 to 1978, [19] when the official name was again, for the third time, Lykoudesion.
Lykoudesi remained the seat of the homonymous community, from 1912 to 1997, when, as part of the changes that took place in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it came under the abolished Tripyla Community, [20] [21] until 2010. The community of Tripyla was officially renamed, in 2006, to the Community of Tripili [22] and was abolished at the end of 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Lykoudesi now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia. [23] [2] ] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlonos, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. Lykoudesi today is the seat in the Local Community of Lykoudesi of the Municipality of Trifylia, to which the settlement of Klonio belongs. [2]
Residents
The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 27 permanent residents, who are employed in animal husbandry, as well as in various agricultural work. [2]
