The settlement got its name from the Monastery of Kera Kardiotissa, which is located in the north. Remains of pre-Hellenic cities have been found at the site of the Karfi hill and on the Papoura hill (altitude 1,026 m.). Due to its location, it was formerly referred to as Minytis, because in this position the purposes were the presence of the enemy. In recent years, there were 35 watermills in the lower area from Agios Georgios Asfendamis to Kato Chorio Keras, which moved with the abundant spring waters of the area. The grains of the province of Lassithi were ground there.

Above Kera dominates Karfi, a Minoan Top Sanctuary of the Late Minoan period. Also, the famous European nature-loving path E4 passes through here. Another walking path connects Kera with the Corner through the gorge of Rosa.

The settlement is mentioned in the Venetian census of 1583 under the name Mesomuri mettocchio [1] with 83 inhabitants.
