Avdou (Αβδού ) Heraklion

Avdou is a village and seat of the homonymous Community, of the Hersonissos section, of the Hersonissos municipality, of the Pediados District of the regional unit (former prefecture) of Heraklion, in the region of Crete. [1]

Prior to the Kallikratis project and the Kapodistrias project, it belonged to the province of Pediados in the prefecture of Heraklion, in the geographical region of Crete. [2]

Designation

The place name is probably due to the prophet Abdi, whose temple existed, according to tradition, in the place "Lines".
Geography

Avdou is in the DBD. part of the former prefecture of Heraklion, in a semi-mountainous location, at the foot of Mount Selena, near the borders with the prefecture of Lassithi and in the valley of the small river Aposelemi. The community is characterized as a rural mountain settlement, with an area of ​​11,747 km and an average weight of 230 meters. It is about 40 km from Heraklion, to the SE, on the road that connects it with the plateau of Lassithi. [3] [4] [5]
Historical data

The oldest mention of the name is made in 1381, while it is mentioned as Avudu in 1387 and Afdhu in 1390. [6] The village is mentioned by Kastrofylakas (K94) as Avdhù with 253 inhabitants in 1583.
Population development

The population development of the settlement is as follows: inhabitants 980 (1928), 1059 (1940), 987 (1951), 857 (1961), 561 (1971), 446 (1991), 431 (2001), 357 (2011). [1] [4] [7] [8] [9]
Administrative changes up to "Kallikratis"

With the Government Gazette 244A - 04/12/1997, the settlement was detached from the community of Avdou and annexed to the municipality of Hersonissos (Source: eetaa.gr)

Difference

Avdou is located in the middle of the green plain of Lagada and mainly produces oil. The village is full of life, especially in the summer when its population rises. This is happening as the locals always return to their place, traditionally honoring the events organized by the educational and cultural association of the village.
Sights

The vaulted church of Agios Konstantinos, which, according to a manuscript, was built in 1445. It has very interesting, but poorly preserved, frescoes by craftsmen Manuel and Ioannis Fokas (EEVS 15, 1939, 274, note 2) important for the study of the development of the fresco. , in the 16th century. Personalities

It is the birthplace of archaeologist Stefanos Xanthoudidis, Nikolaos Kayambis, who acted during the Revolution of 1821 and fought in Messolonghi and was a flag bearer of Karaiskakis, as well as Ioannis Dafotis [11], who participated in the Macedonian Revolution in 1897 and . For this reason, Avdou has acquired the nickname Kapetanochori.

Apart from Captain's Village, Avdou is also famous for the enlightened people who were born and come from there. The arts have flourished in the village, among other things. Physiognomies and personalities who have gone down in history such as Stefanos Xanthoudidis but also artists who today, with their evolution and talent, leave their own mark on time.

The famous director Manousos Manousakis is originally from the village. He visited it often. That's why he chose and shot one of his films there. On the other hand, the singer Nikos Androulakis never stops saying and praising his place of origin. No matter how many years have passed and no matter how much a well-known career he has made in the art world, he returns whenever his obligations allow it, he stays in the village, he sings for his fellow villagers. In fact, his contribution during the Easter holidays is important. Where he gathers the women of the village, creating a choir every year. Which sings in the church and in the streets of the village the praises.

The tradition in the village is rich and the cultural association is very active as various events take place there throughout the year. Old customs are constantly being revived and the goal of all the locals is to promote their village in the best possible way.
