Epano Vatheia (Επάνω Βάθεια) Heraklion
Epano Vatheia is a village in the province of Pediada and the seat of the homonymous Local Community, of the Municipal Unit of Gouves, of the Municipality of Hersonissos in the Prefecture of Heraklion. It is located about 15 kilometers from the city of Heraklion, in the valley of the river Vatheianos. Residents grow olive oil, vegetables and vineyards. The old church of Agios Antonios with frescoes is interesting.

Historical data
Epano Vatheia refers to a contract of the Dominican de Cauza, in 1271. It is listed there as Panno Vatheia. In 1583 it is mentioned (Kastrofylakas, K 95) with the name Vatheia Apano with 125 inhabitants. During the Turkish occupation it was inhabited only by Turks. In 1834 it had only ten Ottoman families and in 1881 only 225 Turkish inhabitants.
It is mentioned in all the Venetian censuses of the 16th and 17th centuries. In the census of 1881, it belongs to the municipality of Episkopi with 228 cat. And in the same municipality it is mentioned in 1900. in the census of 1920 it is not mentioned at all, while in 1928 it is mentioned in the community of Elia. from 1940 onwards it is a homonymous community.
On February 25, 1935, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook Epano Vatheia to the ground, along with other villages. 8 were killed, 204 were injured and 374 families were left homeless in the area affected by Egelados.
