In addition, in the traditional village there are cafes and two taverns. In Elia there are two churches located in the village square, Agios Panteleimonas and Panagia, as well as many small churches around the village.

Historical data

It is mentioned in 1583 as Elia and Glia with 346 inhabitants. [1] Many Turks lived during the Turkish occupation. It has not been established whether it is related to the ancient Cretan city of Elea, which is located by some in Western Crete. In 1866 a strong Turkish corps managed to penetrate the village and take many things from the inhabitants. But before they could get their booty, they were beaten by rebels and 25 people were killed.

In the place of Artsa, between Kato Vathia and Elia, Xanthoudidis found in 1903 a carved tomb dating from the Late Minoan period which contained two clay shrines 1.20 meters long with the skeletons preserved in good condition in the original position, with their collapsed thighs and shins (sepoltura accovachiata). Thus, it turned out that at that time the dead were buried in a closed place with their lower limbs burnt.
Famous residents

Eugenios Gerrard, a historical coach of OFI [2], had settled in the village of Elia Heraklion after his retirement from active action. Since then, he has been a permanent resident of the village until his death.
