[Citation needed The seat of the Municipality is Ano Kalentini Arta. Access to Elati Arta is from two sides. From Arta with the route Athens - Arta - Peta - Ano Kalentini - Xirokampos - Kranies - Astrochori - Elati (399 km, 5 hours 40 minutes New National Road Athens-Patras / Route 8A / E65). The other access is from Thessaly with the new road: Athens - Karditsa - Mouzaki - Orini Argithea, Korakou Bridge - Piges - Grevia - Miliana - Elati (Total 410.6 km, 5 h 26 l). All accesses are asphalt roads of good quality. Note The second route is best avoided during the winter months due to frequent snowfall and severe frost in the early morning hours.
History
From the existing written data and residential findings, it seems that the settlement of Elati took place during the late Ottoman period, during the 17th century. The old name of the village is Ottoman and it was called Seklista until 1950 [2]. The first inhabitants were nomadic cattle breeders who moved from other areas, perhaps from Ioannina but also from Thessaly. Many Elati surnames are found in the village of Fourna in Evritania. The most common surnames found in Elati are common to other prefectures, such as Lykkas (Fourna), Polyzos, Tsoumanis (Ioannina, Zagori), Mavrogiannis, Kotrotsos, Margonis, etc. The village had a mixed and strong economy with livestock, logging, logging. Agriculture, chestnuts, walnuts, apples, beekeeping, corn, wheat, etc. It is recorded that in 1950 it had at least 2,000 inhabitants, 3 bakeries, a permanent doctor, a forest ranger, a warden, and a school with 200 children. Unfortunately, the asphalt access to the village was delayed. It happened in 1985 when it was already deserted. Today, the permanent residents in the winter are estimated at 50 people, while the school is closed and turned into a Rural Clinic. . Historical data are not available for the Ottoman period. However, the last resident to wear a foustanela was the graphic artist Nikolaos Goutsias (Photo of 1956 available).
Elati in the Twentieth Century
For the Asia Minor War (1918-1922) there is evidence that Elatians fought and fell in battle, but also during the Greek-Italian war this small village of Epirus had the relevant losses in human lives (Monument of Heroes with the names in the village square ). Elati Arta played an important role in World War II, because it was the seat of EDES but also the passage of ELAS to Vourgareli - Drosopigi. Unfortunately, the close relations of the village with EDES, cost him two fires from ELAS Battalion led by Charilaos Florakis (also known in the wider area as "Captain Giotis"). These house fires were carried out both in retaliation and in order to desolate the village and prevent the "opponents" from finding food. In 1945, the National Guard unit of Elati was united with the National Guard Battalion under D. Voidaros and pursued the KKE-denounced Aris Velouchiotis in Mesounta, where it had its tragic end. The testimonies of the Elatiotes are the only ones in the literature today. After the war, Elati had a temporary development course, but astyphilia and migration soon deserted it, and today it remains a beautiful Swiss village of old and few summer vacationers. The contribution of the Athens Fir Association was important, both in the construction of projects in the village and in the organization of cultural activities.
