Elati (Ελάτη) Ioannina
Elati is a mountain village in the prefecture of Ioannina within the boundaries of the beautiful municipality of Zagori. It is located in the northern part of Mount Mitsikeli at an altitude of 960 meters, near the village of Asprangeli. Its population according to the 2011 census is 49 inhabitants.
General information
The settlement was formed around the 16th century by cattle breeders from the areas of Gavrisii, Petsali and Zlarovo. The main activity of the inhabitants was the timber trade, while later a large part of the population was expropriated since the settlement is in barren land and agricultural production has always been poor.
It used to be called Boultsi, but in 1926 it got its current name. The village was badly damaged by the German occupiers, who on July 14, 1943, almost completely burned down the village in retaliation for guerrilla action in the area.
Administratively, after the liberation of Epirus, Elati had been subject to the province of Ioannina, later it was subject to the province of Dodoni while from 1997 to 2010 it was located in the municipality of Central Zagori. Elati is characterized as a traditional settlement [1] while in August 2005 it was officially recognized by presidential decree as a martyr village [5].
