Plagia (Πλαγιά) Aitoloakarnania
Plagia is a semi-mountainous village in the Regional Unit of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 200 meters [1].
Geography - History
Plagia is located at the northwestern tip of Aitoloakarnania, near the sea crossing with Lefkada. It is 30 km SW. of Vonitsa and 11 km A. from the city of Lefkada. The village, along with Pogonia and Sklavaina, is officially mentioned for the first time in an act by the notary of Agia Mavra Tzerbani dated 30 May 1692 [2]. Southwest and at a distance of about 1 km there are fortifications of an ancient city with a citadel and an octagonal wall which dates back to the 5th c. e.g. The wall includes 11 rectangular towers and at least one gate. Within the fortification there is a Venetian castle named Agios Georgios that was built at the end of the 17th century (1806 to 1807) and is a typical example of a fortification of that period. It has been declared a protected site since 1969. Together with the neighboring castle of Grivas or Peratias, they were built by Ali Pasha during the siege of Lefkada. Neighboring attractions in the northeast are considered to be the old village (Old Plagia) and the "Castelia of Plagia", which are believed to have been part of the fortified complex of Sterna [5].
Administratively
Plagia is officially mentioned in 1836 as belonging to the then municipality of Zaverda (Palairo). In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, a community of Plagias was established and the settlement is defined as its seat [6]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Ammousa and Palia Plagia, they constitute the Local community of Plagia, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Paleros of the Municipality of Aktio - Vonitsa and according to the 2011 census as a community has a population of 899 inhabitants, while as a settlement 822 [7 ].
