Parapotamos (Παραπόταμος) Thesprotia
Parapotamos (formerly Varfani [1]) is a village in the municipality of Igoumenitsa, in the prefecture of Thesprotia. It is located 10 km NE of Igoumenitsa at an altitude of 100 meters. According to the 2011 census, its population is 754.
General and historical data
According to the latest administrative division (Kallikratis Plan) it was abolished by a homonymous municipality that had emerged (Parapotamou former Municipality), now a seat of a local community, homonymous municipal unit, of the municipality of Igoumenitsa. Its population in 1971 was 663 inhabitants, in 2001 it numbered 1004 inhabitants. Ecclesiastically it belongs to the Diocese of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga and the main church of the village is dedicated to Agios Minas.
In 1925, the community's Muslim president, Hussein Roustan, was assassinated by circles close to the Albanian government as he openly supported the immigration of the Tsamids of Thesprotia to Turkey under the Greek-Turkish Population Exchange Agreement. Three years later, there was an unofficial Muslim school in the settlement, where religious, Arabic and a few Albanian languages were taught. According to the 1940 census, 802 people lived in Parapotamos, of which 762 were Tsamides.
During the Occupation, residents of the settlement from the specific minority participated in dossier organizations [6]. At the same time, it is estimated that four other residents of Parapotamos were killed by the action of the occupying forces and their collaborators. After the war, after the departure of the Tsamids, families of Vlach-speaking nomadic farmers settled in the settlement.
