Palaiopyrgos (Παλαιόπυργος) Aitoloakarnania
Palaiopyrgos, vVillage in the mountainous Nafpaktia of the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania built at an altitude of 720m and extends to two valleys formed under the mountain Agios Konstantinos (alt. 1470m).
It is 25 km from Nafpaktos and is the first village you meet on the 24th provincial road that leads to the villages of Mountainous Nafpaktia, and ends in Karpenisi.
It belongs to the Municipality of Pylini and had a population of 361 inhabitants during the 2001 Census.
During the Turkish occupation it was called Velvitsena but in 1927 it was renamed Palaiopyrgos by the Committee of Greek Toponyms as well as thousands of other villages. Apart from the name Velvitsena, in many old manuscripts there are also variations of the name: Velvitzana, Velvitsaina, Velvitzena. Puckeville, found in the area around 1810, mentions this by the name of Vervizena.
